Following the government’s announcement that schools in England will offer greater access to technical and vocational subjects from age 14, NICEIC CEO Clair Mowbray commented:
“We welcome this announcement as a positive step forward and an important recognition of the vital role that skilled trades will play in the UK’s future.
“It is particularly encouraging to hear the Prime Minister specifically reference electricians as a profession that will be central to delivering some of the country’s biggest ambitions, from the expansion of AI-driven infrastructure and data centres through to electrification, clean energy, and the transition to net zero.
“Careers advice and educational pathways have not always reflected the full range of opportunities available. Introducing young people to skilled trades at school and broadening awareness of vocational careers is a welcome rebalancing of the system. It recognises and celebrates a wider range of talents and skills, particularly for those who may not be interested in pursuing an academic route.
“However, technical education is only part of the solution. The next step is ensuring that young people can move into apprenticeships and sustainable employment opportunities. Electrical businesses and employers across the trades need the confidence to grow, recruit, and train the next generation on-site.
“Alongside skills reform, it is important that government continues to create the conditions for business growth and support firms in navigating what has been a challenging period of rising costs and economic uncertainty. Strong, growing businesses are essential if we are to develop the skilled workforce the UK needs for the future.
