June marks Pride Month, a time to reflect on the struggles the LGBTQ+ community has faced, while also recognising the progress that has been made.<\/p>\n

This month\u2019s Electrical Industries Charity Wellbeing Talk is presented by the charity\u2019s Michael Leese.<\/p>\n

As someone with lived experience and a strong connection to the LGBTQ+ community, Michael brings both personal insight and professional perspective to this conversation. He will share a story of identity, resilience and why it matters to create environments where people genuinely feel safe, valued and have a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n

His journey into this work is deeply personal. After growing up with significant challenges, including time in the care system and a period in hospital during his teens due to mental health challenges, he learned early how vital support and acceptance can be.<\/p>\n

Why Celebrating Pride Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n

LGBTQ+ individuals face unique mental health challenges due to discrimination, stigma, and social rejection. These factors can lead to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n

Pride Month is an opportunity for LGBTQ+ people to feel visible and proud of who they are, especially in a world that hasn\u2019t always been kind.<\/p>\n

Pride Month also encourages allyship. Allies can make a big difference by standing up against discrimination and supporting equality for all.<\/p>\n

How to Support Someone who is LGBTQ+<\/strong><\/p>\n

Supporting someone in the LGBTQ+ community involves understanding, respect, and kindness. Here are some key ways to offer meaningful support:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Listen and Validate: Let them share their experiences without judgment. Offer a safe space for them to express themselves.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Respect Their Identity: Use their preferred name and pronouns. If unsure, ask politely and show respect for their choices.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Educate Yourself: Learn about LGBTQIA+ issues to better understand their experiences and avoid misunderstandings.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Offer Emotional Support: Be there for them, whether it\u2019s listening or just offering a comforting presence.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Stand Against Discrimination: Challenge homophobia, transphobia, and any form of discrimination when you see it. Be an active ally.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Be Patient: Respect their pace in sharing or coming out. Let them set the boundaries.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Encourage Access to Resources: Suggest LGBTQIA+-friendly mental health services or support groups if they need help.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Celebrate Their Identity: Show appreciation for who they are and offer support in their personal milestones, like Pride events.<\/p>\n

By actively listening, respecting their identity, and offering support, you can make a significant difference in someone\u2019s life, helping them feel safe and valued.<\/p>\n
