{"id":16954,"date":"2021-09-18T13:38:14","date_gmt":"2021-09-18T13:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/?p=16954"},"modified":"2021-09-28T13:38:49","modified_gmt":"2021-09-28T13:38:49","slug":"systemic-change-needed-in-lighting-industry-to-adopt-circular-economy-principles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/index.php\/systemic-change-needed-in-lighting-industry-to-adopt-circular-economy-principles\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Systemic change\u2019 needed in lighting industry to adopt circular economy principles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The lighting industry needs a systemic change if it is to fully adopt circular principles and practices.<\/p>\n<p>That was the conclusion of a gathering of lighting designers and industry executives in a special webinar on \u2018The specifier\u2019s role in the circular economy\u2019 organised by the WEEE compliance body Recolight.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers will have to reassess their business models for a time when reuse of products is normalised; designers will have to reconcile the inherent conflicts in creating a high quality interior that\u2019s demountable and reusable; and clients will have to challenge the traditional take-make-waste consumption of building and refurbishment projects.<\/p>\n<p>New business models \u2013 such as specialist \u2018remanufacturing\u2019 firms which upgrade, test, sell and warranty reused lighting products \u2013 will also be created.<\/p>\n<p>Chaired by Ray Molony, head of content at the Build Back Better Awards, the panel included Bob Bohannon, head of policy and academy of the Lighting Industry Federation; Kristina Allison, senior lighting designer at Atkins and chair of the SLL\u2019s education committee; Mark Ridler, head of lighting at BDP; Sophie O\u2019Rourke, Intermediate lighting designer at Nulty+ and founding member of the Green Light Alliance; Bruce Weil, co-owner of the independent practice Lighting Design Studio; and Nigel Harvey, the CEO of Recolight.<\/p>\n<p>Weil said the retail lighting sector especially needed to reconsider its lighting practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real outlier\u201d he told the audience. \u201cIt\u2019s wedded to extremely high illuminance levels and energy use and when we come to offset the carbon in our projects, it\u2019s a real standout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the climate crisis evolves our role as lighting designers will potentially become even more critical but I think we are far from any kind of standardised approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To listen to a replay, head to the Recolight Events Page.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The lighting industry needs a systemic change if it is to fully adopt circular principles and practices.
