Jenny Smith, head of marketing at Vent-Axia, explains the vital role ventilation is playing in achieving this and the opportunities this affords electrical wholesalers.

The closure of pubs and restaurants due to COVID-19 has been a tough part of lockdown for publicans and their customers. Following the easing of lockdown on July 4th, many pubs have re-opened their doors with the others set to welcome back customers in the coming weeks. Before opening though it has been essential that landlords make their premises COVID-secure. This includes evaluating ventilation systems as one of the first steps before reopening as laid out in the Government’s new guidance ‘Keeping workers and customers safe during COVID-19 in restaurants, pubs, bars and takeaway services’. Published on 24 June 2020, the document states that steps that will usually be needed before reopening include: “Checking whether you need to service or adjust ventilation systems, for example so that they do not automatically reduce ventilation levels due to lower than normal occupancy levels.” This clearly demonstrates the importance of effective ventilation in reducing airborne transmission of COVID-19 and making time spent in pubs, bars and restaurants as safe as possible.

Making a return

This isn’t the first time that ventilation has been essential in pubs. Most pubs will already have some form of ventilation installed from before the 2007 smoking ban. Back then pubs had to ensure effective ventilation to extract harmful cigarette smoke. Some fans have been upgraded since 2007 but many are now old and outdated and unable to provide good enough ventilation for the task they must now carry out.

Electricians will want to reassure publicans that upgrading ventilation in pubs is not a big job, and so wholesalers can really help out by providing them with the right product. Wholesalers should look to stock robust and reliable fans that offer good airflow, energy efficiency and low noise levels. And ease of installation and replacement saves time on site and so reduces costs, making them popular with installers.

With outdated, ineffective ventilation in some pubs landlords will be relieved to know that it’s simple to replace traditional fans with modern alternatives that will reliably supply effective ventilation. For example, Vent-Axia’s Lo-Carbon T-Series Fan range can simply replace traditional commercial extract/supply fans with a low carbon alternative as it’s compatible with existing fan sizes allowing for easy replacement. Available in 6, 7, 9 and 12-inch options, the range includes wall, window, roof, panel, and inline variants, as well as variable fixings to help with different window and wall thicknesses, making installation simple. And if it’s an older model T-Series that needs replacing, like-for-like refitting takes less than 5 minutes making it the most time and therefore cost-efficient recommissioning strategy for an existing install. A major selling point for wholesalers.

With ventilation essential in mitigating the risk of indoor COVID-19 transmission, advice and guidance from the ventilation sector on how best to do this in each individual property is crucial. By effectively ventilating pubs to extract the virus, landlords are making their venues as safe as possible for people to enjoy a pint again. And by providing advice on the right products for installers to carry out this essential task, wholesalers are central to this being a success.

Life is being breathed back into pubs and bars across the country following an impromptu closure due to the Coronavirus lockdown, But it’s been vital that these businesses were made COVID-secure before they re-opened to help protect both customers and employees.
