This has been a prominent talking point in the business world over recent weeks, with many forecasting a \u201cnew normal\u201d where remote working becomes commonplace. Nic Redfern, finance director at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knowyourmoney.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KnowYourMoney.co.uk<\/a>, shares his insigts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It seems likely that, having been forced to embrace it since the lockdown was introduced in late March, many organisations will now be more open to allow employees to work from home on a regular basis. In fact, some employees will demand it, having enjoyed the various benefits of remote working over the past three months.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, in one form or another, offices will soon re-open as social distancing measures are relaxed, with staff asked to begin working from their usual desks once again. This transition back into office working will not be easy, nor should it be taken lightly by business leaders across the UK.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here are three questions businesses must address before they return to the office.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Can you keep your employees safe?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Productivity, business continuity, serving clients \u2013 these are usually top of a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ny<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0business\u2019 list of priorities. Now, though, they have been replaced by one core issue: the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0safety<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">employees<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No business should\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ask<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0its staff to return to the office until\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">necessary steps have been taken to make the risk of anyone catching or spreading COVID-19 as low as possible.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indeed, the Government has release<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0its\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">safe working guidance<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">help employers through this process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unless a business has a very spacious office, they will need to look at the layout of their desks, which will likely be too close together to align with health and safety guidelines. Further<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0desks, chairs and storage units<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0might need to be removed in order to make a space safe.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elsewhere, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">usinesses should also consider investing in other equipment to protect employees.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, they might need to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0install screens between desks, hand sanitiser<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0pumps and clear demarcation on floors to help people keep their distance from one another.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Employees will need clear instructions about the new health and safety protocol<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which should include conduct in the office (handwashing, coughing and sneezing, and so forth) as well as staying home if they are presenting any signs of being unwell.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">usiness<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">es<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0must be diligent in conducting or arranging regular deep cleans of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ir<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0office<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Who should you bring back to the office and when?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is unlikely that businesses will suddenly invite their entire workforce back to the office at the same time and on a full-time basis. A staggered approach would make much more sense \u2013 having smaller groups of employees return on certain days, perhaps starting with just one or two days a week in the office.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When only having smaller numbers in the office, it would be sensible to ensure particular teams\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0such as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0marketing, finance or sales<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all invited in at the same time, thereby<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0maximis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the value of them being back in the office. After all, the return to the office is primarily a way of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">increasing the ease of collaboration and allowing certain tasks to be completed more effectively than when all employees are working remotely.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over time, as the virus hopefully subsides and people adapt to the new normal, more people can be hosted on-site at any one time. Businesses can also address the balance between time spent remote working and time spent in the office, ensuring a happy medium is found.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Are you listening to employees\u2019 concerns?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The return to office working will not be popular in some quarters. Many people have grown fond of working from home, free as they are from the hassle of commuting and office politics. Others will have serious health concerns about heading into more crowded spaces.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indeed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a recent survey of more than 2,000 UK adults commissioned by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knowyourmoney.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">KnowYourMoney.co.uk<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0revealed that exactly half (50%)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0anxious about social distancing measures being\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">relaxed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Further anecdotal evidence certainly suggests that many people are non-plussed about the prospect of returning to the office.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After months of largely avoiding public spaces \u2013 and certainly indoor spaces \u2013 the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prospect of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0crowded buses, trains, streets and offices is understandably daunting.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Businesses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0cannot simply tell their staff to come back to the office; they must speak to employees individually to assess their state of mind. Where possible, it would be prudent to be as flexible as possible in accommodating people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0requests for remote and flexible working;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this ought to boost employee satisfaction and retention.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whatever strategy is chosen, it will require careful thought.
