The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has released a new publication titled \u2018Indoor Air Quality at Home\u2019, which provides guidance for the public on how to reduce their exposure to indoor pollutants.<\/p>\n
Key advice within the publication for reducing the risk posed by indoor pollutants is\u00a0ensuring\u00a0rooms are well ventilated\u00a0through the use of extractor fans, trickle vents, cooker hoods\u00a0and opening windows.<\/p>\n
Another key recommendation is the\u00a0reduction of\u00a0damp and condensation in the home. Condensation and mould is not a new problem, but improved insulation and air tightness of existing properties without considering ventilation is causing a rise in new cases. For refurbishments, permanent effective ventilation must be included alongside energy efficiency measures.<\/p>\n
NICE also offers advice on reducing damp and condensation by using background ventilation;\u00a0using mechanical ventilation where possible; opening windows where possible and safe; avoiding moisture producing activities and removing any residual moisture when it forms.<\/p>\n
According to Public Health England, between 28,000 and 36,000 deaths a year are related to\u00a0long-term exposure to air pollution, making it is the biggest environmental threat to health in the UK.<\/p>\n
