This was the second year that the competition has been held and it attracted more than 400 entries.<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-11606\" src=\"https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-1-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-1-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-1-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-1-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-1-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-1-2-500x333.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>George Maynard (<em>pictured receiving his prize from Scolmore\u2019s Managing Director, Gary Mordue<\/em>) from Leicester has been crowned winner of the 2017 NICEIC and ELECSA Apprentice of the Year competition, sponsored by Scolmore Group.<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year-old was one of eight competitors to reach the final, which Scolmore was very proud to host at its headquarters on June 6<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>George said: \u201cI was shocked when they called my name out. I thought all the lads in the final produced some great work and they were all top guys. I think getting to the final was a great achievement to be honest. It\u2019s a lovely way to round off all the hard work I have put in over the last three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The finalists were put through a grueling day of challenges comprising nine separate tasks designed to assess their abilities across a range of disciplines including testing, fault finding, conduit bending, tray manufacturing and safe isolation. This year\u2019s final challenge also included a Virtual Reality test followed by an interview with Certsure\u2019s Technical Standards Director, Alan Wells.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-11607\" src=\"https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-5-1-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-5-1-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-5-1-107x150.jpg 107w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-5-1-768x1081.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-5-1-728x1024.jpg 728w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-5-1-150x211.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-5-1-355x500.jpg 355w, https:\/\/ewnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PIC-5-1.jpg 1421w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Pictured: Judge, Darren Staniforth, checking the work of Ben Elliott, in the final.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As well as hosting the grand finale of the competition at the company\u2019s head office premises, Scolmore also organised the BBQ and awards ceremony at the nearby Belfry Hotel and provided a range of prizes for those apprentices who made it through to the final.<\/p>\n<p>The winner, George, was presented with a holiday voucher worth \u00a32,000, runner up Michael Costello, 25 from Edinburgh received a holiday voucher worth \u00a3750, while third-placed Billy Stapleton, 20, from Essex received a \u00a3250 holiday voucher. His level of skill and overall enthusiasm shone through and we wish him, and all of the other finalists the very best in their future careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 young men and women entered this year\u2019s competition which recognises the talents of the brightest electrical students in the UK. This year\u2019s contest witnessed more entries from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales and demonstrates the growing appeal of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Parry, Scolmore Group\u2019s Marketing Director said: \u201cScolmore is committed to helping develop the talent of the future and we were once again hugely impressed with the calibre and standard of all eight finalists. It\u2019s an exciting sector, with an abundance of opportunities for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo of the directors here at Scolmore started out as apprentice electricians and have carved out successful careers on the back of the vital experience and training that the apprentice programme provided. We wish all the finalists every success as they continue on their journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Competition stages<\/h4>\n<p>The journey to the Electrical Apprentice of the Year finals day involved a number of stages. The first stage of the contest was an online exam comprising a variety of questions relating to electrical installations. The top 20% performing students from this stage then progressed to stage two &#8211; a practical one and a half exam paper, which was held at six locations across the UK. The eight students with the highest marks then battled it out in the Grand Final.<\/p>\n<p>Darren Staniforth, Technical Development Manager with NICEIC and ELECSA, was involved in the judging process. He commented: \u201cWe really wanted to test their ability to carry out a range of tasks that we feel all good, skilled apprentices should be able to do \u2013 along with some tests that they might not have been so comfortable with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was tough choosing a winner but I am confident all of them will go on to have a successful career in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>George is currently studying at Leicester College. In the short-term he plans on taking his pals away to Barcelona with the voucher from his victory. But longer-term he has bigger plans.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI am keen to learn as much as I can and just see where it takes me. There are lots of opportunities out there and I want to experience as many aspects of the trade as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s finalists were: Elliot Booth, 19, of Peter Booth Electrical Contractors; Josh Broniman, 19, of DJ Hoyland Electrical; Michael Costello, 25, of Arthur McKay; Ben Elliott, of CDC Electrical; Curtis Legrice, 19, of JAH Electrical Services Ltd; George Maynard, 25, of Geom Solutions; Hayden Smith, 18, of S Scott Electrical Ltd and Billy Stapleton, 20, of Bancroft Ltd.<\/p>\n<h4>This year\u2019s judges<\/h4>\n<h5>Tony Cable, Senior Events and Marketing Engineer, NICEIC &amp; ELECSA<\/h5>\n<p>Tony has worked in the electrical contracting industry for more than 60 years. He started out as an apprentice in 1957 and went on to own his own electrical contracting business before moving into college lecturing. He has gone on to present a series of award winning DVDs aimed at electrical students and apprentices. In 2009, Tony won the \u2018Outstanding Contribution to Electrical Excellent\u2019 from the Electrical Times, in recognition of his career achievements over the last 60 years.<\/p>\n<h5>Darren Staniforth, Technical Development Manager, NICEIC &amp; ELECSA<\/h5>\n<p>Darren began his electrical life in 1995 as an apprentice electrician. He then moved to Bedford College to complete his higher education and qualify as a lecturer. In 2006, he joined NICEIC as an Operations Engineer, assisting with all technical matters. In his current role, as Technical Development Manager, he co-presents at NICEIC &amp; ELECSA events and TechTalks.
