Prysmian cables help protect water plants on the Isles of Scilly

prysmianPrysmian’s FP200 Gold cable has been installed in new addressable fire alarm systems, protecting several water treatment and desalination plants, located on St Mary’s, the largest island of the Scilly Isles. The facilities are important for supplying drinking water to the local population of some 1800 people. Over 2,200 metres of 1.5mm2 FP200 Gold cable was used for the four projects undertaken by Fire Crest Fire Protection, the contractor responsible for the installation on St Mary’s island.

In addition to adhering to the demanding standards of cleanliness and hygiene required for this type of installation, there was also the added logistical step of transporting the cable via sea to the archipelago located 28 miles off the UK mainland.

Adam Laud, Fire Crest Fire Protection’s Project Manager, chose to specify Prysmian because of the critical nature of the water treatment plants. As the fire alarm system shuts down the plant as part of routine for a safety requirement, the cables needed to be robust enough to meet the most demanding of safety standards.
Adam says: “I have specified Prysmian cable as I need to ensure I have 100% confidence in the quality of the cable. This is especially important when interfacing fire alarm equipment to mission critical and life support systems.”

FP200 gold is the first choice for ‘standard’ fire resistant cable because of its insudite insulation. Insudite is Prysmian’s specialist tough composite insulation, resistant to impact, nicking and abrasion; common events that can readily result in failure of silicone only insulation. FP200 gold is BASEC and LCPB approved, and has excellent data and signal transmission characteristics, which make it ideal for addressable systems.
