The materials shortage has continued to be a problem for the UK trades for two years now. New research* found that more than three-quarters (78%) of tradespeople struggled to source the materials theyโ€™ve needed in the last year.

As a result, almost half (46%) have had to delay or turn down work, and nearly a fifth (19%) have been forced to let customers down after committing to jobs. Unfortunately, more than one in five (22%) respondents said that they canโ€™t see the shortage easing anytime soon, and that they believe problems will continue into 2023.

There have, however, been signs of the situation easing slightly in recent weeks – so hereโ€™s hoping the situation will continue to improve as the year goes on.

On to the issue. Weโ€™re celebrating not one, but two milestone anniversaries for key industry companies this month. On page 24, you can read a history of ESPโ€™s journey from humble beginnings in 1992 as a small provider of wireless intruder alarm systems, to becoming a leading UK manufacturer of electrical accessories and lighting products and a part of the Scolmore Group today.

Elsewhere in the issue, I interviewed Danny MacFarlane of Ellis Patents about the cable cleat manufacturerโ€™s amazing 60 year history. Turn to page 26 for a truly great origin story.

This month, our cover story comes from Timeguard, with an overview of the companyโ€™s wide range of easy-install LEDs. Read more on page 10.

This issue includes our regular news, views, product and installation features from market-leading businesses across the sector – topics this month include home automation, energy-efficient lighting and electric heating.
