December issue of EW!

Welcome to the December issue of Electrical Wholesaler.

Boris Johnson announced at the CBI conference that upcoming new regulations will require all new homes in England to be installed with Electric Vehicle charge points (EVCPs), adding 145,000 new charging points a year between now and 2030 to the network of 250,000 already installed in homes and workplaces so far.

However, a Freedom of Information request conducted by ECA in September found that two thirds of local authorities in the UK have no plans for installing public EVCPs. Over half said EVCPs were prohibitively expensive to install and over a third cited constraints such as a lack of energy network capacity. It will be interesting to see whether the government backs up such pronouncements with adequate investment in infrastructure and green upskilling. You can read more about the ECA’s take on this issue in our Industry News on page 6 and 7.

Anyway, enough politics, on to products. This issue has a special focus on home security, and smart home security in particular. We spoke to a number of specialists in the home security and home automation sector to find out the latest developments – and constraints – as the UK increasingly moves towards a ‘smarter’ future.

I also spoke to Hamilton’s Gavin Williams about the current trends in wiring accessories, post-COVID supply chain recovery, and Hamilton’s continued dedication to quality assurance – take a look at the interview on page 16.

Finally, as always, this issue includes our regular news, views, product and installation features from market-leading businesses across the sector.

Enjoy the holidays and here’s to a happy – and hopefully greener – new year.
